Quote of the Day

"I am insane, but I knew what I was doing."

Sixties Poster for the Monterey International Pop Festival - Hendrix, Otis Redding, the Who, Janis Joplin and the Dead, among others. An era of raging hippies. I miss it.

changes (so so so so so so)

I need to buy a great digital camera - have spent maybe 300 dollars on paints, canvases and brushes and now I need some very good photo equipment.

I need to continue losing weight and to not lose my passion for art. I have stopped watching most TV. Only Lost, once a week. I need to get healthy. Start playing tennis.

Not sure what I will do about other subtle priorities. A Rubicon has been crossed - sadly. I have been blessed and cursed with a most amazing ride - I know have regained some energy. But my soul is hurting today and I have little for a baseline comparison.

One should keep a diary - a journal or blog. Only by writing it down do you sense that the way you feel now, today, this moment, is ephemeral. Unless you write it down you live too much in the present - today's emotions cannot rule.

Here is a toast to Edward Weston who wrote daily. Here is to one of my favorite photographers, as I face and walk into a late winter deserted street without strong coffee and maybe no longer ever having to wait, again.

So so so so so so so so so so. Always and everyday. Soon, probably never. Someday somehow somewhere. Soon. Soon. Soon.

Peace, my wonder, and I will walk into the rain without an umbrella. Always.

"the day angels fell from the sky"

Threw hooded warbler acrylic painting away today - let's bury it as a learning experience. No pain, no gain.

A Gift Horse

A friend went to DC and brought back a thoughtful token gift, a small black bound book entitled "Taxi Driver Widsom." Nice black and white photos that relate to one sentence philosophal statements gleaned in cabs.

I opened the book today and found "Never be embarassed about something you like."

"Soon, Sometime, Someday, Never, Everyday"

Less is more. I should learn from that in many aspects of my life. Note to file - get realistic. Version on top does not have "negative" effect.

*Musical Pause*

This past January we had a trade show and I went to a vendor party a Russian restaurant in the low 50's where we sampled flavored vodkas - garlic, pepper, cherry, tarragon, lemon, et al. I was with work friends , one a Ukrainian, and he and I got fairly wasted. Maybe ten double shots of vodka each in the upstairs open bar.

We ended downstairs at the restaurant and my friend ordered a huge meal - I remember crepes and caviar and warm borscht and Chicken Kiev, and a pork dish. We kept drinking vodka and two Ukrainian women, married, ended up at our table. One was a photojournalist and the other a stunning blond in the fur trade. Cousins. Well, we drank more vodka and talked and discussed photography, animal rights, music, marriage, love, the Ukraine.

We finally left around midnight and I began to walk towards Penn Station. Suddenly there was a brief snow storm as I walked briskly down Seventh Avenue and the lights, snow and buzz were amazing. The snow swirled and glowed in the night and I felt light and young and so so so happy. I had my iPod on load and kept listening to one song over and over again, "You're Beautiful."

"My life is brilliant

*Musical Pause*

My life is brilliant.
My love is pure.
I saw an angel.
Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that,
'Cause I've got a plan.

(chorus)
You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause Ill never be with you.

Yeah, she caught my eye,
As I walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
fucking high,
And I don't think that I'll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

(chorus)
You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful it's true
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
I will never be with you.

(La-la-la-la, La-la-la-la, La-la-la-la, Laaah)

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth,

I will never be with you."

The moment was memorable and its effects momentarily stunning. I think I sang along, with conviction, aware of the truth in every word. And it was not just the alcohol singing. Maybe the vodka was humming, but I believed what I sang and to the core of my soul.

It was the only time that I have enjoyed snow this long strange winter......

Walking today in a nature preserve....birds and giants

Took a couple of miles walk in a nature preserve. Saw an amazing flock of Fish crows - maybe thirty birds. Fish crows look a lot like American crows but can be distinguished by their call - their sound. Fish crows sound like the crow talking through a kazoo - a duck like nasal call.

Other birds I saw were common gulls (ring billed and Herring), two white throat sparrows, one song sparrow, one Downy woodpecker, a beautiful great blue heron flying seventy feet high, some distant ducks (possibly flying hooded mergansers), Brandt and the ubiquitous Canada geese.

Hooded merganser is elegant, but would taste incredibly fishy due to its diet, you know. Small and full of energy.

As I continued why walk I met a man about my age jogging with a Giants cap on - not a NY Giants football cap, but a San Francisco Giants baseball cap. That is my team. My only real team.

When I was twelve I said to myself - someday I will have sex and the Giants will win the World's Series. Well, many years later it has not happened. Close but no cigarette, joint or anything. One time it was a matter of outs and I sat there amazed - dreamlike and stunned. It all fell apart. Horrible. They lost that game and the next day they lost the Series, 4 games to 3.

When your are twelve and a boy - sometimes you live for baseball.

So this guy and I shared a moment and he spoke how another new player intended to shield Barry Bonds form steroids questions. And I could tell he was a real fan.

Go Giants, even though there is no hope. None at all. Baseball, Starbucks, art - whatever.

I love baseball, tennis, and now am appreciating soccer. There is much more that I love so much more. I am no longer twelve, you know.
